The standard advice for mountain climbers is not to look down. Those who have followed the trajectory of the U.S. farmland market needn't worry. In much of the Midwest, values have risen on average by 300% since 2000 and show no sign of falling in early 2013.

In the first week of January, 373 acres in central Iowa with no commercial development potential sold for $17,000 per acre -- more than $3,600 per acre above Murray Wise's expectations and 70% above the county's average just last November. The farm sold in nine minutes.
