Normal Rains Expected for India

MUMBAI (Dow Jones) -- India is likely to see average rainfall during the rest of the critical monsoon season, likely buoying the nation's farming sector and sagging economy.

Nearly half of India's population works in agriculture, so strong farming output boosts rural spending and the broader economy, which expanded at the slowest pace in 10 years in the last fiscal year.

"The only engine of growth this year looks like agriculture and I think it's very critical at this juncture," said D.K Joshi, chief economist at ratings firm Crisil.
