METEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION

The northern branch of the jet stream features a blocking ridge between northeast Siberia and Alaska. The polar vortex over Canada, centered over central Canada. And a trough over Greenland. This is a cold pattern for Canada. The southern branch of the jet features a migratory trough moving through the ridge position over the eastern pacific/Gulf of Alaska. And a broad trough over most of the U.S. Strong subtropical high pressure dominates central and southern Mexico, the southern and eastern Gulf of Mexico, the northwest Caribbean and the southwest atlantic.
