The northern branch of the jet stream features the polar vortex over Alaska and northwest Canada. A blocking ridge extending from south-central to northeast Canada and across Greenland. This is a cold pattern for much of Canada. The southern branch of the jet features a ridge in the eastern pacific.

A trough over the western US. A weak ridge over the central US. And a strong trough over the eastern US and southeast Canada to the south of the blocking ridge in northeast Canada. Subtropical high pressure dominates central and south Mexico, the Caribbean and the south atlantic.
