One of the things we have been watching this winter has been the trend in the daily Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) in the pacific.The overall SOI pattern has been neutral this winter. However we have seen periods of a week or two when the daily SOI values have turned either strongly negative (El Nino) or strongly positive (La Nina). We have noticed changes in the weather patterns taking place in both the US and South America during these changes in the daily SOI.
