USDA Updates Corn Yield Estimates

USDA surprised more than a few corn bears Tuesday morning with their Crop Production report. The trade, particularly the spec funds, had been pressing the market for weeks in expectation of record national average yield for corn. The trade average guess was above 170 bushels per acre. USDA found record ear counts (about 29,600 per acre), but using the third-largest assumed ear weight in history, came up with a 167.4 bushel per acre national average yield.
