Waterhemp is the Houdini of the weed world. The hardy, prolific member of the Amaranthus family was already outsmarting various chemistries when Roundup Ready technology arrived to save the day. By 2005, the great escape artist had figured a way around glyphosate, too.

"The greatest concern is not just resistance to glyphosate, it is resistance to two and three and four classes of herbicides," said Aaron Hager, University of Illinois weed scientist. "Multiple-resistant waterhemp is really the problem."

Waterhemp populations now exist with resistance to triazines, ALS-inhibitors, PPO-inhibitors, HPPD-inhibitors and glyphosate in 14 states, from Mississippi to Minnesota. Most worrisome ...
