Group Explores GE Compensation

OMAHA (DTN) -- USDA hasn't offered enough data to prove farmers raising crops and other products as non-genetically-engineered (non-GE or non-GMO) are suffering economic losses and other hardships related to possible contamination by genetically-engineered crops. This according to a report from the 21-member USDA Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture, delivered last week to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

The report said there is no silver bullet to address concerns about the unintended presence of genetically-engineered material, but recommended that any compensation program developed should be modeled after crop insurance.
