Tens of Thousands of Cattle Gone

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (DTN) -- As they dig out the bodies of their dead livestock, shocked South Dakota ranchers are being told losses could be in the tens of thousands.

Jodie Anderson, executive director of the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association, said what hit western South Dakota was a "perfect storm" that started with heavy rain, followed by a wet, heavy snow and then winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour. Some drifts, she reports, were 7 and 8 feet tall.
