Like many producers, Joe Prud'homme cut back on fertilizing pastures several years ago when nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium prices hit record highs. In fact, the rancher from Tyler, Texas, did not make direct applications of commercial fertilizer to his coastal bermudagrass pastures for three years.

"Cattle prices, at that time, did not support paying 70 cents a pound for nitrogen," Prud'homme said. "Fortunately, I had maintained good residual soil fertility over the years."
