Buy 'em right, sell 'em right, and put on pounds in between. Backgrounding cattle sure sounds simple enough, but for stocker operators like Shawn Alloway, the business realities are complex and dynamic.

The young Kansas cattleman started running his own cows when he was 13 years old. It was that herd that helped put him through college. After building to about 200 head, he began shifting to stocker cattle and found his niche. He has focused on that segment of the industry since 2001.
