BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (DTN) -- When the Buenos Aires Cereals Exchange forecast that Argentine 2013-14 wheat area would rise by 8% back in April, many farmers and analysts were left scratching their heads.

Farmers had turned away from wheat in droves in recent years, scared off by government meddling in the domestic and export markets, and few saw any reason for growers to return when next season's planting begins in late May.
