LAWRENCE, Kan. (DTN) -- If you are among the fortunate farmers whose wheat survived the winter, hold your celebrations.

Entomologists are now urging growers to scout for army cutworms, even as many are still struggling to evaluate the range of winterkill in their awakening wheat fields.

"We've had reports of army cutworm in north-central Kansas, southwest Kansas, northwest Kansas and south-central Kansas," Kansas State entomologist Jeff Whitworth told DTN. "Usually every sixth, seventh or eighth year, we'll have a pretty good crop of army cutworm some place in the state, and there are more of them than usual this year."
