The first Roundup Ready gene is now a teen and not far away from leaving its parent to become a generic trait. Just don't assume you'll legally be allowed to keep that seed at home once the patent expires.

Soybean farmers have had access to the Roundup Ready 1 (RR1) trait technology since 1996. U.S. patents are only granted for a 20-year period, so beginning with the 2015 planting season, Monsanto will no longer collect trait royalty payments from those who purchase or sell RR1 seed varieties.
