Informa: 2014 Soy Acres Up 7%

Growers have been dismayed about soybean yields hovering around 40, 50 or 60 bushels. Yields are increasing, but only at a third of a bushel per year genetically. Maybe it's time to revisit solid-seeded semidwarf soybeans?

I participated in several field days in September at which Richard Cooper, retired USDA soybean breeder from Wooster, Ohio, was a featured speaker. He presented his work on the performance of semidwarf soybeans. Cooper released 15 semidwarf varieties during his long career. I was astonished by the data he presented and even more surprised I had never heard of semidwarf soybeans.
