On Friday morning, USDA gave us some much-needed guidance on the size of the U.S. soybean crop. It trimmed U.S. planted acreage to 75.688 million, reflecting updated prevented planting data from FSA. This was a little lower than expected by the trade, with the average trade estimate at 75.9 million acres. USDA used a 43.0 bushel-per-acre average yield number, the largest national average yield since the 43.5 bpa in 2011. With a smaller harvested acres number than in 2011, the soybean crop is not expected to be record large. The record is 3.359 billion bushels from 2009.
