DOE Faults Propane Distribution System

STREATOR, Ill. (DTN) -- The small and "fragmented" distribution system for propane in the United States is a partial culprit for the severe shortages of propane in the Midwest and Northeast needed to heat homes this past winter, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Energy.

In addition, erroneous weather forecasts for a mild winter proved far from the mark, while supply heading into the winter was already depleted because of a late corn harvest last fall that required extensive crop drying with propane that exacerbated the supply issues, DOE said.
