Higher World Sugar Estimates

LONDON (Dow Jones) -- The global sugar industry could produce 200 million metric tons of the sweetener annually by 2020, the International Sugar Organization said this week, while better crop varieties and more efficient irrigation will be necessary to combat long-term climate change.

"Obviously it's a big ask and there's a lot of serious tasks to settle ... (but) 200 million tons is a target for the industry, rather than a huge unrealistic challenge," Sergey Gudoshnikov, senior economist at the International Sugar Organization, told the London-based body's annual conference.

Gudoshnikov said the world sugar industry could produce 190 million tons ...
