GYPSUM, Kan. (DTN) -- The light clouds of dust that swirled up under Justin Knopf's new John Deere 1890/1910 air seeder were deceptive. When the Gypsum, Kan., farmer hopped out of the cab to check the freshly sown furrows, his pocketknife turned up dark, damp soil just one inch below the surface.

Knopf continued flicking away at the furrow, methodically revealing a tidy row of soybean seeds, buried roughly 1.5 inches deep. Satisfied, he moved to another furrow and continued his mini-excavation, oblivious to the baking sun and passing minutes.
