SALINA, Kan. (DTN) -- When USDA agronomist Randy Anderson first heard of the yields on Ralph Holzwarth's farm in central South Dakota, he decided to investigate.

Holzwarth, a no-till farmer in Potter County, was boasting corn yields of 150 bushels per acre, in a region averaging 18 inches of rain, at planting populations of only 22,000 plants per acre. To put that in perspective, eastern South Dakota farmers were only pulling in yields of 140 bushels per acre with 23 inches of rain and average planting populations of 32,000 plants per acre on frequently tilled land.
