The Big Cover-Up

Rick Murdock believes in covering up. This spring, the Murray, Ky., farmer will no-till into a tangle of annual ryegrass so thick that it's hard to believe a corn crop could penetrate it.

"Over the years, I've convinced more than one skeptical landlord that this system works," admits Murdock, who has a decade of experience with the practice. "We've seen enough value with cover crops that all of our ground that came out of double-crop soybeans and will go into corn this year has annual ryegrass cover.
