USDA Releases Census Findings

OMAHA (DTN) -- Cass County, N.D., produced the most soybeans in 2012, while Kossuth County, Iowa, raised the most corn, according to the full release of the 2012 Census of Agriculture. Corn and soybean acres topped 50% of all harvested acres for the first time.

Eighty-seven percent of farms are operated by families or individuals and 39% of cropland was rented in 2012.

Both sales and production expenses reached a record high in 2012. While producers sold $394.6 billion worth of agricultural goods, it cost them $328.9 billion to bring those products to market.
