House OKs Scaled-Back Farm Bill

OMAHA (DTN) -- The U.S. House of Representatives passed a farm bill 216-208 along party lines Thursday afternoon following a storm of controversy, procedural delay and Democratic outcry that Republicans were attempting to take "food from the mouths of the poor" in separating nutritional programs from the rest of the farm bill.

Though nutrition programs were pulled in an attempt by the House to move a farm bill to a conference committee, Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said on the House floor that he has had no assurances the Senate would be willing to consider the House bill in conference.
