Lucas Looks Ahead to Markup

WASHINGTON (DTN) -- House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas is planning a farm bill that will cut $38 billion in spending over 10 years, $3 billion more than last year, with $20 billion coming from the food stamps account and $18 billion from the rest of the bill.

Lucas, a Republican from Oklahoma, has scheduled a markup of the bill on May 15. The proposed $38 billion cut would make it easier to get the bill through the Republican-controlled House, but the large food stamp cut -- $20 billion compared with $16.5 billion last year -- will make it difficult ...
