New Safety Rules From CFIA

OMAHA (DTN) -- After Canada Day, consumers will start to see changes on meat labels that the government hopes will lead to safer handling of food and help prevent E. coli.

Starting July 2, federally-registered plants that produce mechanically tenderized beef cuts will be required to label them as tenderized and also add cooking instructions, according to a press release from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

This is part of a bigger initiative announced late last week by Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz in Saskatoon as he unveiled the government's Safe Food for Canadians Action Plan.
