Groups Sue to Block COOL Rule

NORMAL, Ill. (DTN) -- Eight major meatpacker and livestock groups from the United States and Canada are suing USDA to block implementation of new country of origin labeling rules for meat.

In what is now a decade-long battle over labeling meat and segregating animals, the meatpacker and livestock groups representing much of the North American red-meat industries, filed a lawsuit Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

USDA issued new rules in late May for labeling meat cuts following a World Trade Organization ruling last year that the old COOL rule discriminated against livestock from Canada ...
