STABENOW LEERY OF PROPOSED SMITHFIELD FOODS BUYOUT

Last weekend, Senate Agriculture Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., appeared on C-SPAN's Newsmakers program and was asked about the proposal by Chinese pork processor Shuanghui International to buy Smithfield Foods. Stabenow was not enthusiastic. "This is the largest sale of a company in the United States to a Chinese state-owned enterprise," she said. "Frankly, I would encourage someone else -- an American company -- to bid so there were options."
