GENERAL COMMENTS:

Activity in cattle country was restricted to the distribution of new showlists. The new offering appears to be generally smaller than last week, especially in Texas. According to the closing report, the Iowa hog base closed $2.81 higher compared with the Prior Day settlement ($64.00-$74.50, weighted average $73.41). Corn futures settled generally 7-8 cents higher thanks to short covering ahead of the late-week report on planting intentions. Stocks bounced off their worst levels but still ended in negative territory once initial euphoria over Cyprus fizzled. The Dow closed 64 points lower with the Nasdaq off 9.
