California Voters Reject Prop. 37

COLUMBIA, Mo. (DTN) -- California voters rejected a controversial ballot initiative for mandatory labeling of foods with genetically engineered ingredients sold within the state. Yet while Proposition 37 was defeated decisively at the polls, the margin (53.1% to 46.9%) was far from overwhelming, and both sides in the battle are claiming a victory.

"It appears voters rejected Proposition 37 in California, the flawed and misguided food labeling measure," Kathy Fairbanks, the press manager for the campaign against the proposition, stated in a press release. The defeat, she said, showed Californians were swayed by arguments ...
