OMAHA (DTN) -- Ports in the Pacific Northwest, as they've expanded capacity and built up interior supply chains, have won a growing share of U.S. exports. However, some experts think the Panama Canal expansion could reinvigorate exports from the Gulf of Mexico -- if the inland waterways system can keep pace.

"Grain handlers are always evaluating the cost of moving soybeans via the PNW or via the Gulf," said Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soybean Transportation Coalition.
