OMAHA (DTN) -- After another costly campaign, agribusinesses were able to defeat a biotech food labeling initiative in the state of Washington on Tuesday.
Initiative 522 would have required labels for most foods that included ingredients from biotech crops. The ballot measure failed 54.8% to 45.2% with 986,530 people casting ballots on the issue.
The results are not final because mail-in ballots have not been counted. However, opponents acknowledged to Seattle media Tuesday night that the mail-in vote was unlikely to change the outcome.
I-522 would have required labels on most processed foods sold in the state of Washington.
