In 2010, 49 million people, more than a third of them children, lived in households where access to food was uncertain, whether it was due to lack of money or lack of a backyard garden, USDA’s Economic Research Service reports.

Nearly 15% of the U.S. population is food insecure, where there is not always access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet daily dietary needs. Even those who have access to food through food banks or soup kitchens don’t necessarily find high levels of nutrition.
