A drive across the Corn Belt during June indicates how much nitrogen has been put at risk due to heavy rains. It also brings up the long-standing nitrogen management strategy of applying all of your nitrogen in the fall or spring.

It seems every season at least some part of the Corn Belt faces the issues of excessive rain and lost nitrogen.
