Western Hemisphere Corn Demand Surges

OMAHA (DTN) -- Accumulated export sales of U.S. corn to Western Hemisphere countries so far this marketing year have more than doubled last year's total with Mexico, Colombia and Peru increasing their imports the most.

Colombia increased corn purchases 52-fold, while Mexico bought 250% more. Peru went from using no U.S. corn in 2012-13, to buying more than 1.1 million metric tons (46.5 million bushels) for 2013-14.

Western Hemisphere nations agreed to buy 14.81 mmt (583.1 mb) of corn as of May 22, more than double the total export sales of the 2012-13 marketing year, as corn prices dropped from ...
