Yield: It's in the Spacing

Canopy counts. Squeezing soybean rows pushes yield. New research shows as much as a 3- to 4-bushel advantage in drilled and 15-inch row soybeans over 30-inch rows. There are factors beyond yield, however, that encourage growers to widen row spacing.

For 10 years, the Petersons—Bill, David, Bernard and Albert—drilled soybeans in 7½-inch row spacings at their Loretto, Ky., farm. However, they recently began planting some soybeans in 15-inch rows. “We wanted to see if more consistent seed spacing will make a yield difference,” Albert Peterson says.
