Bob Bowman has been writing some hefty profit-sharing checks to his landlords over the past two years. But that's OK with the DeWitt, Iowa, farmer. It's part of doing business in a competitive farmland market, and it's one method he uses to build a stronger relationship with landowners.

"We compete by being fair, open and honest," says Bowman, who farms more than 2,200 acres of primarily no-till/strip-till continuous corn with his son Chris. Slightly less than half is family-owned property, and the remainder is cash rented. "I grew up here," he continues. ...
