Geologist and author David Montgomery has found his speaking schedule filling more and more with farm groups wanting to hear his take on global soil erosion and possible solutions. That surprises him.

While Montgomery’s second book, “Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations,” was popular among the environmental community and soil scientists, the geology professor from Washington State University says he was, at first, a little curious about how farmers would react.
