If asked by some desperate Chinese baker to help stuff fortune cookies this week, I would inscrutably bow and ink the long strips of paper something like this: Big markets often defy small explanations.

Unless the diner who just finished his Red Meat Lo Mein actually fed livestock for a living, my contribution to the traditional dessert might seem long on pith and short on sense. Nevertheless, the bullish tidal waves that have swamped the first quarter of 2014 surely prove the wisdom of my makeshift aphorism in spades.
