Joe Davis has an operation most producers would envy. His management-intensive grazing program keeps his forages and cows in great shape. He expected pregnancy rates for his 65-day breeding season to be in the 90%-plus range, and his calves had a reputation for doing well in the feedlot.

But the Westminster, S.C., producer wasn't completely satisfied. He was thinking of genetics improvement. So in 2009, Davis decided to use artificial insemination (AI) to improve the quality of his Angus-Brangus herd with the addition of Simmental genetics. The results were not pretty.
