Estimate Winter Forage Needs

DAVENPORT, Neb. (DTN) -- When estimating winter forage needs, it is vital to determine the quality of the forage in order to calculate the quantity needs.

The only way to get a good estimate of the quantity needed is to have forage tested, especially with grass hays, according to Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension animal scientist.

It is important to have hays tested for protein content, though many tests contain both protein and energy content, since the total digestible nutrients (TDN) of energy content is very much correlated with protein.
