Report: Cattle Herd Down in 2013

(Dow Jones) -- The U.S. government's cattle inventory data confirmed that the nation's cattle herd contracted again in 2013.

However, ranchers retained more young female cattle to produce new animals -- a sign the ranchers are rebuilding their operations as feed prices decline and drought eases in some regions.

The report, released Friday, was viewed as generally neutral for prices when the futures markets reopen on Monday.
