USDA Issues Final Animal ID Rule

OMAHA (DTN) -- USDA on Thursday announced a new mandatory livestock monitoring system seven years after the U.S. found three cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy that virtually shut down U.S. beef exports, according to a news release from USDA.

USDA has worked on a traceability system since the 1990s, but hit a brick wall in the early 2000s when livestock producers fought against a USDA plan for a national mandatory system.

The new program announced Thursday, while mandatory, gives states flexibility in how animals are tagged and records kept. It also only requires tracking of animals shipped over state lines. ...
