AMMONIA

World ammonia market prices gradually firmed through September. Prices for Russian export ammonia were at $430 to $440 early and finished the month at $450. (All prices in this column are wholesale.) The increase was much more due to supplies decreased by turnarounds at several Former Soviet Union (FSU) export plants than to increased demand. At the TFI Conference in Montreal late in the month, the mood among ammonia producers was somber over concerns about the impact on ammonia demand of the poor markets for phosphate fertilizers, urea and artificial fibers.
