OMAHA (DTN) -- Farmers in the Northern Plains region had a close call with fertilizer deliveries being delayed last spring. Winter weather well into the spring and massive railroad shipment delays combined to slow fertilizer transportation once farmers started spring fieldwork. Northern Plains retailers already are developing contingency plans to avoid a repeat.

Levi Taylor, who farms near Ypsilanti, N.D., said fertilizer was "a little scarce" at times last spring once work began. Ironically, the wintery weather which helped to create the delay also helped to prevent a much worse fertilizer shortage from occurring, he said.
