Klinefelter: By the Numbers

One thing I've noticed in studying farm finance over 40 years is that better operators elevate their game by learning from the best. Today it's known as the Michael Jordan effect: When there's a star on a team, everyone's game improves. When neighbors in any given farm community can see a $175-per-acre spread in cost of production for corn, for example, they know the champ has something to teach his peers. The challenge is they need standard financial benchmarks if they're going to try to measure themselves against like farms or against farmers who raise different commodities.
