One of the critical differentiators in commodity agriculture is efficiency. As more of agriculture moves toward coordinated supply chains, consistency, documentation and verification will become increasingly important. For example, Walmart now insists that its suppliers don't use child labor or excess fertilizer and it wants more than promises to verify compliance. In the 1990s, livestock industry leaders adopted standard operating procedures (SOPs) to assure uniform products and avoid damaging consequences such as inadvertent drug residues in the bulk milk tank.
