The American Star Farmer award has been around since 1929, almost since the founding of the National FFA Organization. One of the first awards established by FFA, it was designed to honor young farmers who had achieved mastery in production with plans to continue careers in agriculture.

During the last eight decades, FFA has added more Star awards, including honors in agriscience, agribusiness and agricultural placement. Winners have gone on not only to pursue careers as producers but also as researchers and ag-related business owners.
