(Dow Jones) -- Archer Daniels Midland Co. said it will move its headquarters to Chicago, a step by the agribusiness giant to give a more cosmopolitan home to top executives after more than four decades in the small city of Decatur, Ill.

ADM's decision, announced Wednesday, was widely expected, though the company had been seeking a package of tax incentives from state government to guarantee that it remain in Illinois. The company decided to announce its new headquarters even though state lawmakers failed to approve those sweeteners during a legislative session earlier this month.
