PHILADELPHIA (DTN) -- One driver in the expected fertilizer expansion gold rush for North America isn't what farmers will feed their corn crop: It's what they'll feed their tractors and trucks.

While often overlooked compared to fertilizer urea, industrial urea uses, such as the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) needed in most new heavy-duty diesel engines, affect overall urea demand.

Non-fertilizer urea only makes up about 11% of the global urea consumption, according to Monica Baker, research manager for Integer Research based in London. Baker spoke at the 2012 Fertilizer Outlook and Technology Conference held in Philadelphia last week.
