There's a new furrow in Marion Calmer's brow. The Alpha, Ill., farmer is contemplating planting corn in narrower rows. That's saying something, considering he's been planting in 15-inch rows for nearly two decades.

Yes, Calmer owns a machinery company and has a patent pending on a 12-inch row corn head. However, he said the desire to increase plant populations and yield lies at the heart of his increasingly narrower focus.
